Common Misconceptions about RCM
Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a powerful methodology, but it is often misunderstood. This article addresses common misconceptions about RCM, including as the belief that it is solely focused on preventive maintenance or that it is overly complex and time-consuming and that it is expensive

Why OEM Manuals may not consider the whole story
Many companies rely on OEM manuals for maintenance, which provide fixed schedules for tasks like replacements and inspections. These manuals seem structured and compliant, but they don’t account for specific operational conditions.
Because OEMs often don’t know the actual use-case of the equipment, blindly following their instructions can cause over-maintenance, missed issues, or wasted resources.
This paper argues that while OEM guides are useful, they shouldn’t be the only input. Instead, it promotes using Reliability-Centered Maintenance (RCM) — especially as defined in SAE JA1011 and JA1012 — as a better, more context-specific approach. OEM manuals should be reviewed critically, not followed automatically
