Reliability Management

Reliability Management specialises in the application of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) – a process to improve the reliability, availability and cost effectiveness of assets and processes. RCM can be applied to assets or processes in any industry. We work with our clients, offering flexible levels of support, for large and small projects, and we offer a range of RCM products and services.

Our RCM services include different levels of RCM Training, RCM Consulting and RCM Facilitation. These services are backed up by a range of products, the development of which is ongoing. Present offerings include supporting Apps, such as the RCM Decision Making wizard and Training Videos which form part of a hybrid training programme.

Please contact us if you’d like to discuss how we can help you improve the performance of your problematic or critical assets through the application of RCM.

Welcome to the Reliability Management Website. My name is Chris James, and I am the owner and founder of Reliability Management Ltd.

I studied Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University in London and started my career as a Design Engineer in the aircraft Industry. I carried out my first FMEAs in the mid-1980s.

I had the good fortune to meet John Moubray in 1990 and the privilege to attend one of his three-week RCM Practitioners Courses in early 1992. I have been training, applying and consulting in RCM ever since.

For 11 years, until his early death in 2004, I was a direct employee of Moubray at Aladon Ltd, as a Senior Consultant and as Licensee Liaison Manager – helping to manage Aladon’s worldwide network of licensees. During this period, in addition to managing my own clients, I ran the RCM Public Courses in the UK for 6 years after Moubray moved to the US, and I also worked with him to develop materials in the RCM2 book.

From 2005 to 2015 I worked for Schlumberger Business Consulting (SBC) applying RCM to a wide range of upstream and downstream OIl and Gas assets, and also to clients in other industries. As a Management Consulting organisation SBC had a particular focus on business benefit – including the quantification of the results of RCM analyses, and the implementation of the outcomes to achieve those results. Many of my case studies, including two award winning projects, were carried out during this period.

In 2015 I set up my own company, Reliability Management. While I am the only employee or Reliability Management, I can access a large network of ex-colleagues if necessary to support larger projects. One of my more recent activities has been working with fellow Independent Practitioners in the International RCM Certification Committee (IRCC).

I have been lucky to work in many countries – too many to list here – and a wide range of industries. These include Oil and Gas (Upstream, downstream and midstream), Renewables, Thermal Power Generation, Electricity Transmission and Distribution, Pharmaceuticals, Food, Electronics, Metals (Aluminium and Steel), Mining, The Military (Navy and Airforce), Paper and Pulp, Automotive, Chemicals, Logistics and Cement.

It is fascinating how different industries face similar issues and challenges, and how RCM can work in different environments. The more experience I gain – and we never stop learning – the more I am convinced that RCM is has greater relevance than ever!

I offer flexible support for clients wishing to improve the Reliability and Cost Effectiveness of any asset or processes through RCM complying with the major international standards. I facilitate RCM analyses, but I also support clients’ own personnel to carry out RCM analyses themselves through various consulting services and a range of RCM courses at different levels.

I have also developed a set of training videos, to enable hybrid training, and RCM related products.

The website contains a page giving further information about RCM including an overview of the process, and some common misconceptions about the process. a page dedicated to some case studies showing examples of the successful application of the process, a page describing Reliability Management’s products and services, and a page for clients, featuring training videos, further case studies and RCM products.

If you have any questions or comments please get in touch. It would be great to hear from you.
